The car swerves as Pa turns, yanks the book from my hand, and throws it out the window. “Paganism!” he says. “Pure and simple. Sounds like the blasted Book of Mormon!”

“My book!”

“Now it’s just a bird, flying away.”

“Why are you so afraid to have her learn something?” Ma says, louder than I’ve ever heard her.

“Guess you’ve forgotten something, Agnes. Guess you’ve forgotten that I’m the man of the house. Anytime you want, you can just stop coming along with us. Me and June can do without you.”

The idea of going along with just Pa, and not Ma, makes me chilled down to my bones. I start to shiver. Rhett pulls me closer. Something about his heavy arm loosens all the tears inside of me, like two rivers carving out the earth of my skin.
